Koufonisia beaches

Beaches at the Koufonisia of the small Cyclades

The Koufonisia in spite of being small, as are all the small eastern Cyclades, offer some of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Greece. Dreamlike golden beaches with crystalline emerald and turquoise waters circled by san dunes or sculpted rocky outcrops with their unique golden colors and many hidden coves. The mountains of Naxos and Amorgos protect them from the strong northern summer winds called the Meltemi characteristic of the Cyclades islands. Crowded or not, all the beaches of the Koufonisia have been formed almost as though they are attempting to seduce you into staying forever!
At the upper Koufonisi, to the northwest you will find Parianos, a cove with a wide sandy beach well protected from the winds and a favorite harbor for the picturesque small fishing boats. It is the generous wide harbor beach with clear shallow waters a short distance from the village which is preferred by the locals, children and anyone not wishing to go too far.
The most beautiful beaches however are gathered on the eastern side of the island.
At the end of the beachfront road you will see Finika also known as Harokopou, whose name comes from the hotel restaurant at that location belonging to Dimitris Mavrou. This is a golden beach with turquoise waters which is preferred by families.
This is followed by another beach with similar golden sands and waters called Fanos sometimes also Defteri meaning Second (beach). There is a hotel at that location which opened recently and the area and waters are a favorite of the younger generation an all who partake in sea sport.
Continuing east we meet many hidden coves for those that wish to be alone and end up at Italida or Platia Pounda, which is the most popular of the islands beaches and perhaps one of the most beautiful in the Cyclades. A small cove at the one end is favored by those who feel a swimming costume is not essential.
Even farther to the east we see many more small coves with sand or pebbles and rocks that form caves and among them is Pisina a natural hollow pool which is what the name means with crystal clear waters.
Northeast of upper Koufonisi is Pori, a big golden beach and also among the most beautiful of the Cyclades ideal for wind surfing. it is paradise on earth accessible by a road from the inland where two beach bars are a favorite watering hole for all visitors.
At the very northern end of the island is Xylovati promontory with a splendid view of Naxos and Gala where you can dive for sea caves in the clear Aegean waters.

Beautiful Greek island of TINOS

Tinos
The island of Tinos is a destination not yet known from mass tourism, far from worldly and cosmopolitan atmosphere of the neighboring islands (Mykonos first and foremost).

You get to Tinos by sea from the port of Rafina (4 hours drive) or the nearby Cyclades.
The discovery of the miraculous icon of Virgin Mary, venerated by all the Greek Orthodox Church, the place where now stands the shrine dedicated to Panagia Evanghelistrìa, Tinos has made it popular with Orthodox pilgrims. The faithful come to the sanctuary to kiss the image of the Virgin Mary and to participate in pilgrimages (25 March and 15 August and 15 November). The Shrine of the Annunciation was built at the beginning of '800, and every year it is invaded by pilgrims, to redeem themselves from their sins, kneeling traverse the road that climbs the mountain. This type of religious tourism remains only to Tinos town, while the rest of the island remains peaceful.
On the island there are many churches and chapels, but also Christian Orthodox, after the Venetians had imported and converted to Catholicism many residents.
In the countryside are raised pigeon features, also legacy of the Venetians who raised the pigeons. There are hundreds, geometrically decorated stone. But you can also find many windmills and watermills, and is understood by the abundance of wind and water. As for the winds blow often, have the foresight to control the morning and choose the repaired part of the island, depending on the type of wind.
The city of Tinos and excursions
The capital, where you will find many restaurants, taverns, bars, bakeries and even discos, not as often happens in the islands of Greece, the only real town on the island that instead relies on a green countryside dotted with ancient villages and beautiful, very different between them, each with its own traditions and different architectures (white houses with blue doors and windows, stone houses, houses with marble facades, etc.). Tinos is famous for its white marble and green marble known since ancient times and was very much for the churches, houses, fountains and even in the streets, beautifully paved.
Since 1955 the island is on the School of Art in the village of Pyrgos. Pyrgos is the artists' town of Marble, a quiet place with good roads. Beautiful traditional villages of Xinara, Skalados, Koumaros, Tripotamos, Falatados, Volax.
The beaches of Tinos
The beaches are beautiful and easily accessible to many and different among themselves, fine, golden sand beaches, small coves and beaches with round stones, but always with clear water and quiet. At Tinos we will move with buses or taxis: the latter are plentiful and cheap.
To the south east of the capital are the places most frequented by families and tourism greek (Agios Sostis, Agios Kyriaki and Agios Ioannis Porto) with beautiful views of the nearby Mykonos and Delos. To the north, then you will find after Pyrgos Ysternion (fine gray sand beach in the shade of tamarisk), Kardiani, Agios Petros, Agios Romanos.Kolymbythira The area is one of the most beautiful parts of the island.
Kitchen typical Greek island of Tinos
The island produces vegetables, honey and a particular herb called alifoni eaten in salads. Local specialties include garlic sauce, fried tomatoes, the louza. For dining, we recommend the restaurant "Metaxi Mas", specializing in appetizers. Recommended is a visit to the bakery Zakaroplastion Mesklies, where gourmands can enjoy Greek pastries like baklava (layers of flaky pastry filled with honey and chopped nuts), the loukumades (donuts fried and sprinkled with honey and cinnamon) and galaktovouriko (puddingsemolina flavored with lemon, cooked in milk and vanilla and tightened by two thin layers of puff pastry).

Sifnos.Cyclades islands Greece.

Sifnos
Sifnos is the fourth island of the western Cyclades, you get to the ferry port of Kamares and the landscape is totally lunar rocks made of totally devoid of vegetation. In contrast inside the island is lush, the hills are rich with olive groves and almond trees, the hillsides of the mountains are covered with low vegetation and herbs. Mountains make up the bulk of its territory, reaching a height of 680 meters and contribute to the charm of traditional Cycladic Sifnos.
The many towns of this island are quite extensive interconnected by paths, this makes it the ideal destination for holidays for trekking and for those who love long walks in nature. The climate is very hot, also in August is very crowded, for both these reasons we recommend a holiday in Sifnos in July or September.
Cities and villages of the island of Sifnos
Its population centers, among the most elegant of the Aegean, is a destination for artists and intellectuals, but once again the protagonist here is the sea with its crystal clear waters, rugged coastline and beautiful beaches. The capital is Apollonia, Kamares it is a major port and resort with Platis Yialos, Faros and Vathy. Also in Sifnos give a charm entirely spiritual and especially the numerous churches and chapels built in the most inaccessible island escarpments, cliffs, bare rock.
Apollonia is on the edge of a plateau at 5 km from the port of Kamares. It 'a very lively center despite its small size it has been able to combiare the preservation of their traditions and beauty of its historic center with modern life also made of traffic, shops and tourist services. Apollonia is now united to the neighboring towns Artemonas, Kato Petals, Exambella and the charming medieval Kastro, the most panoramic point of the island, a Venetian fortress built in the thirteenth century, paradoxically built within the circle of houses grew spontaneously in the form of wall defensive over the years. Inside the Kastro are also a small Archaeological Museum.
Many windmills and above all to Artemonas Examblea. Numerous taverns and good quality, we can find both traditional Greek and managed by Italians and French.
Beaches and other excursions on the island of Sifnos
Moving south again, about 10 km from Apollonia, we find the most popular seaside resort on the island of Sifnos Platys Gialos. A beautiful golden sandy beach well equipped and suitable for children. From here the boat you can visit the church of the Virgin Kitrianì on the islet at the entrance of the gulf. The close is good for fishing and diving while exploring deserted beaches, the island offers plenty of shade. For those seeking less crowded beaches and bays mention near the beaches of Platys Gialos Saoures, Apokoftò (an expanse of sand from the sea, quiet and minimally served) and Fassoulou.
On the west coast Vathi is a beautiful sandy bay with tavernas, meter in Faros, a small fishing village and Spitale, you can find a nice sandy beach for swimming and also served children. Faros is also home to the monastery of Chrisopighì (Madonna of the source of gold) built in the seventeenth century on the tip of a small promontory where first emerged a rock lookout.
And we have now in Kamares, Sifnos' main port and an important tourist center. Here you can breathe the air of a typical holiday resort thanks to the wide beach and the local taverns.
From here you can sail aboard small boats for trips to Vathi and Heronissos on the northern island. And 'This is the capital of ceramics, an art highly developed island in past centuries and strength of your household. Heronissos is the most isolated of Sifnos. Here you can enjoy total peace of mind and for the brave who want to climb up to the northern tip of Heronissos as a present a breathtaking view over the Aegean.

Mykonos. One of the most beautiful Greek Islands.

The island of Mykonos, rugged, rocky, parched by the sun and often beaten by the winds is one of the main attractions of Greece: emerald sea, fine sandy beaches enclosed by cliffs, white Cycladic houses. Mykonos is located at a distance of 94 nautical miles south-east of Piraeus, covers about 85 square kilometers and a coastline length of about 80 km.

Those who reach Mykonos from the sea immediately captures the particular charm of the white light of Mykonos town, port and capital of the island, arranged like an amphitheater around the bay. By whitewashed houses with flowered balconies, external wooden stairs, a tangle of narrow zig-zag, small red or blue-domed chapels and a crown of windmills is the quint essential Cycladic world that meets the trendy, find the most "chic", people of the night eccentric and never tired.

The picturesque district Alefkandra or Little Venice, owes its name to the typical houses with wooden balconies and loggias lapped by the sea, many of them turned into restaurants and cafes to enjoy the most romantic sunsets. To the south of the district are the characteristic windmills have become almost the symbol of the island.
From the pier Alefkandra different tiers rise above the mills, arranged like a crown on the crest of the spectacular panoramic hill.
The beautiful beaches of Mykonos
For lovers of the beach, Mykonos offers a multitude of beaches that can be easily reached by bus or by boat departing from various points of the island.

Milos.Cyclades Island Greece.

Milos

Milos is an island of medium size, 150 square kilometers and seven urban centers in real cities and small towns. It is located in the southern part of the Western Cyclades islands and is known to most people as the place where it was found the statue of Venus, now in the Louvre museum in Paris known as the Venus de Milo.

Only recently, tourism has discovered Milos as a holiday destination with its natural beauty to a large extent due to its volcanic origins make it unique among all the Cyclades islands.
Milos offers more than seventy beaches, spas, and interesting archaeological sites. Lives on the coast of Milos monk seals, one of the most endangered marine species around the Mediterranean and with a little 'luck you can see it sailing between the coast and the islands surrounding Milos.
The city of Milos
The seven cities of the island are Adamas, Triovassalos, Pera, Trypiti, Plakes, Plaka, and Pollonia. Very interesting to visit the villages Mandrakia and Klima.
Adamas (or Adamantas) is the island's main port, and although the capital is Plaka, it is the vital center: it is not just the articulation of the major roads but also the home of most of the islands accommodations. Here you can visit the churches of Aghia Triada and Agios Halarambos and boat to boat trips. In July the city hosts the Milos Festival featuring traditional dances, gastronomic events and jazz concerts, one of the festival is the ancient greek theater near Trypiti.
Plaka, as we have said is the capital of Milos and certainly the most distinctive city: with its narrow streets and whitewashed houses overlooking the bay from the top of the hill where it was built on the ruins of the ancient town of Milos. Plaka is just 5 km from Adamas and south merges with Trypiti. In addition to the interesting Archaeological Museum and the Folklore Museum of Arts and here you can visit the French kastro built on an ancient Acropolis where you can enjoy magnificent views. Near Trypiti well worth visiting the catacombs of the first century, the only example in Greece, very suggestive and should not be missed.
Not far found Klima, a fishing village very characteristic white houses and colorful doors.Another nice destination for a trip is Pollonia, even the boats sail from here to the island of Kimolos.
The beaches of the island of Milos
The beaches of Milos offer an impressive natural beauty and variety: there's white sand and black sand, small pebbles or shells, or large rocks surrounded by too many colors.Even the waters of the sea surrounding Milos fade from blue to blue, to emerald green in a palette that will not fail to impress.
Most beaches are easily accessible by good roads from the pavement, but some can reach only by foot or by sea. The beaches can not miss in our opinion are the following:
Firopotamos: a very pretty little bay with fishermen's houses
Mandrakia: a little gem of small houses with shelters for fishing boats.
Sarakiniko: a moonscape rocks incredibly white and a small bay
Agios Konstantinos: a shelter for the boats that enter through narrow passages in the rock
Papafragas: a narrow sandy beach between high walls of rock
Pollonia: a nice beach surrounded by trees
Paliochori: 10 km. from Adamas beach this is perhaps the most interesting island, made of small pebbles and hot springs
Haghia Kiriaki: a long beach of sand and fragments of shells
Tzigrado: a beach of perlite, white as snow, plunges into a deep blue sea
Firiplaka: near Tsigrado wide sandy beach surrounded by colorful rocks
Provatas: beautiful beach of reddish sand
Gerontas: small black sand beach with arches and caves.

Amargos,Cyclades islands Greece.

Amorgos Cyclade islands,Greece.

The island of  Amargos the easternmost of the Cyclades islands. Amorgos is the ideal island for those who really want to pull the plug and leave the real world. 138 square kilometers of arid and uneven surface where there are few people who have managed to preserve customs, landscapes, places really special.
The tourist attractions of the island of Amorgos
Even from the point of view of tourism Amorgos offers gems, starting from Chora, one of the most beautiful of the Cyclades, with its white buildings that rise on the plateau at 400 meters above sea level at the foot of a small medieval castle (Kastro) erected in the thirteenth century by the Venetians, surrounded by small windmills built on the surrounding hills. When not enjoying the quiet of the town and the stunning landscape, you can visit the Archaeological Museum full of exhibits that illustrate the importance of this island over the centuries.

Another important center of the island and main port is Katapola: a relatively large bay where there are three villages Xilokeratidi the westernmost of which is best known as the fishing village. From there you can get with "water taxis" the beaches of Amorgos and the nearby islets.

In the Gulf of Eyiali, in the northeastern part of the island is the only beach typically ciclidica: a long stretch of white sand, clear water and shallow, tourist facilities of good standard. Even here though there are hills and cliffs that rise above the village of the wider Gulf.

The Monastery Hosoviotissa
The greatest tourist attraction is certainly the island of Amorgos Monastery Hozoviotissa, an apparition of a dazzling white set in the rock overlooking the sea. Built in the eleventh century, the monastery is still inhabited by monks available to guide you through the eight floors of the building illustrandovene history also extremely interesting. The monastery, which develops almost exclusively in height was in fact built by exploiting the layered rock wall communicating with each other mainly through external stairs: the monks' cells, the refectory, the store, the main chapel. The monastery also houses a miraculous icon found in the waters below the cliff. The monastery is located a short distance from Chora you can then get to walk it down the cliff and taking some of the most beautiful landscapes of the Cyclades

Zante Ionian islands,Greece.

Zante Ionian islands,Greece.
Zakynthos (or Zante) is painted just like the poet in his poetry: a place of natural wonders, beautiful beaches with very different landscapes and also due to the shape of the island .
The western part of Zakynthos, mountainous and rocky, has remained intact while the beautiful beaches to the east are the destination of many tourists, especially during high season. Zakynthos is the third of the Ionian islands in order of size, here you will find plenty to see and beautiful beaches on which to relax. But the feature that makes it famous are certainly specimens of an endangered sea turtle, the loggerhead turtle. In 1999 the Bay of Laganas, where many turtles come to lay their eggs, has been declared a marine national park and were introduced severe restrictions on beach access from both land and sea. To preserve this endangered species every visitor to Zante can learn about the current regulation in protected areas and try to contribute by respecting it.Along the rocky western coasts the seals Monachus also plays, also protected and safeguarded.

The city of Zakynthos
Zakynthos is the capital city and main port of the island. Many of the Venetian palaces that flank it are unfortunately destroyed during the earthquake of 1953, you can still admire the citadel perched on a hill about 2.5 km from the town of Bochalia. Despite the many tourists who walk the streets of the city, Zakynthos maintains its typical greek atmosphere and extremely pleasant. There are many things to see, from the Byzantine Museum in the Museum of Sacred Art in addition to the characteristics Bochalia churches throughout the city.
Excursions and beaches on the island of Zakynthos
Many of the attractions of the island both in terms of natural and water sports. There are many beautiful beaches where you can relax and fascinating places to see at least once in their life.
If the Bay of Laganas is perhaps too crowded, the beach resort of Keri is a much more pleasant even if the stony beach is quite narrow. From here you can take boat trips to see the many fascinating natural caves (some visited only by swimming) and stacks.
Placed between Agios Nikolaos and Cape Skinari Blue Caves are one of the most famous natural attractions in Zakynthos and can be reached by sea. They consist of special geological formations that have created a series of caves along the northwest coast of the island, and owe their name to the special reflexes that water takes in them.
For beach-lovers suggest the Vassilikos peninsula and the tip of the east coast Banana beach with its long stretch of golden sand. On the tip of the peninsula Agios Nikolaos is another place to enjoy the sea and the beach with sun beds and umbrellas.
If you have a means of transport you can reach the inlets of the west coast including Limnionas and Kambi, head to Agios Nikolaos or addentrarvi in the picturesque hinterland north of Zakynthos, where you can find pristine pine forests, picturesque villages and a rural life that has kept many of the their traditions.

Lefkada,Ionian Islands,Greece.

Lefkada,  is the fourth largest of the Ionian  Islands . Located just south of Corfu and the north of Kefalonia is connected to the mainland by a causeway 25 kilometers long. Lefkada is a mountainous island and the highly fertile ground where you can see olive groves, vineyards and pine forests as far as the eye. Off the east coast there are ten small islands, while the west coast offers spectacular beaches. The sea and the charm of the coast and surrounding islands make it an ideal destination for those who make sailing holidays, preferably on a sailing boat.

Discovering the city of Lefkada
Besides being the name of the island Lefkada is also the name of the main city, built on a promontory at the south-east of a saltwater lagoon. Largely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1948, owes part of its architecture to its anti-seismic measures that have been applied, an example would be detached from the church towers built basilicas themselves. The city offers a pleasant and relaxing, place to discover walking aimlessly through the streets: a bustling main street, the square that serves as a meeting place, many churches and a marina, recently built to house many yachts that arrive on the island. Inside the Cultural Centre you can visit the archaeological museum, another museum to visit is the collection of post-Byzantine icons. A short walk from the causeway stands the fortress of Agia Mavra, an imposing Venetian building of the fourteenth century.Excursions and activities during the holidays in Lefkada
To visit the island is certainly Nydri, a village that was once a fisherman and now proposed as a resort. Its nice pier with restaurants and the interior of the country. Nydri is also the right starting point for visiting the islands of Madouri, Sparti, Skorpidi, Skorpios and Meganisi. There are numerous excursions of up to Ithaca and Kefalonia. Also missed the falls located 3 km from the town and reached by a picturesque path. 15 km south of Sivota Nydri you can visit, a place not too busy with a quaint fishing harbor.
Vasiliki is the main center for water sports on the island, and is considered the best places in Europe for windsurfing, but it is also the perfect place to relax at a table in a restaurant on the promenade and sea breeze. You can reach the best beaches in the gullet, we report the Agiofyli beach, south of Vasiliki, where there are numerous places for rent wind-surfing and sailing.
The beaches of the island of Lefkada
The west coast of Lefkada offers perhaps the most beautiful sea of ??all the Ionian islands: the turquoise waters and long sandy stretches, and we announce Pefkoulia Kathisma to the north, and Porto Katsiki Egremini remote south. If you love the holiday village atmosphere can make a stop in Agios Nikitas but especially in the neighboring beach of Mylos.
In addition to those arriving in Lefkada beaches should not miss the interior with traditional farming villages and lush countryside. From here you also enjoy breathtaking views of the coast and on islands surrounding the island. It should be mentioned Karya village, known for its embroidery, which produce the local women.
Of the islets that surround Meganisi Lefkada is the most populous, is well worth a day trip starting from Nydri: a beautiful green landscape, turquoise bays fringed with beaches of pebbles. Three villages of the island: Spartohori be reached via a steep ladder or stairway that depart from Porto Spilia where the ferry docks, Vathy is the second port and from here the road to Katomeri about 1 km distance.

The Peloponnese

The Peloponnese is a peninsula connected to mainland Greece by a narrow strip of land, indeed, since it was opened the Corinth Canal would be more correct to call it Island ... And 'a world still largely intact, not exploited for tourism, so that is Greeks often meet only for days and days. Yet there are hidden treasures of immeasurable of ancient Greek culture and under the eyes of the visitor parade unusual and fascinating landscapes.

Monemvasia is an unspoiled corner of the Middle Ages in the heart of Laconia, the town is still accessible only through a narrow isthmus. Monemvasia is located at the foot of a rocky outcrop. It 'was an important commercial center during the first and second Venetian domination and these days its palaces and churches in the ancient village.During these periods of history was known as Malvasia from which the name of the famous white wine imported in Italy until the end of the nineteenth century.
Tholos is a fishing village in Argolis and is an excellent starting point for visits to many archaeological sites in the Peloponnese, thanks to its central location. The country has much to offer visitors with its charm, for the modern tourist attractions but also for its beautiful natural landscapes. And 'surrounded by a circle of mountains, but also offers lovers of the sea white sand beaches and crystal clear waters
Aeropolis is ideal leads to the Mani peninsula, a part of Greece to the edge of the world, almost uninhabited, where women still wear often, the traditional dress blacks. The Mani is a land of terrible beauty, and particularly bleak, offers visitors a unique landscape, not to be missed. The villages were built to defend against attacks by invaders from the sea, real fortresses, towers, many with small windows, almost slits. Few accesses to the sea, a few villages inhabited, almost all at the top for better defense, and a few hamlets of fishermen on the sea. A narrow road runs through the scenic Hands for around seventy kilometers (departure and arrival Areopoli). The mountain ends so relentless and spectacular in the blue of the Ionian Sea. Other natural spectacle not to be missed are the Caves of Dirou (about 25 miles from Aeropoli): in the cave of prehistoric Alepotripa were found, one of Glyfada has been excavated by a river flows into the sea below the current entry.
The Mani Peninsula is full of medieval churches also, remember those Harouda, Agios Sotirios Gardenitsa to the church and to Tassiarchi economy. Own economy by offering unique landscapes on the islands off the coast and the coast
